Generally, a flex day may be rescheduled on a work day as soon as possible following the closure as mutually agreed between you and your supervisor and to meet operational needs.

We’re nearing the end of Camosun’s 2017 United Way Campaign. Like every year, there is a fundraising challenge between CUPE, CCFA and Exempt working groups at the College. This year’s challenge: which employee group team can sell the most 50/50 tickets?
Here’s the tragic truth, brothers and sisters – CUPE lost the first round of this challenge. We didn’t only lose, we came in dead last. Luckily, we have another chance! The next draw is this week, on Thursday, Dec 7. We can race like a dark horse from the back of the pack and emerge victorious!
Tickets are only $2.00 each. The more we sell, the better chance CUPE has to win this challenge. Plus, the more tickets you buy, the better chance your chance to win the 50/50 draw. And more tickets sold means more money raised for the United Way, so everyone wins! Note: the tickets you purchased for the previous draw do not count. You have to buy fresh tickets!

Looking toward the municipal elections slated for the fall of 2018, we will be gathering with social and environmental organizations, activists, elected officials and community members to develop a regional policy platform for the Capital Region.

The CUPE National Convention is coming up fast with the convention opening on Monday, October 2nd at 9:30 am at the Toronto Convention Centre. Various Sector Council meetings take place the day before at the Convention Centre starting at 10:00 am. A copy of the full agenda can be found at https://cupe.ca/event/cupe-national-convention-2017 as well as a useful convention mobile app.
At this point we have scheduled one caucus for delegates from British Columbia. This will take place on Monday, October 2nd, 2017 at 12:00 pm in room 716 in the Convention Centre. We may book an additional caucus if needed. Caucus meetings are extremely important as we discuss resolutions, elections and other business at this meeting. I ask that you ensure all of your delegates attend.
As you may be aware, CUPE BC President Brother Mark Hancock has declared his intention to run for re-election as our CUPE National President. Brother Mark has been unanimously endorsed by the CUPE BC Executive Board and has already garnered support from the majority of leaders from other Divisions across the country.
But in order for Mark to be successful we need a lot of help from CUPE BC members with Mark’s campaign during convention. We need numerous delegates to assist with campaign material distribution and convention floor microphone management. Registration is now open for Stewarding – An Introduction (2 day workshop). This workshop is for stewards or those members who are interested in becoming a steward. CUPE 2081 is looking for new stewards. This is a great opportunity to learn about this role before taking the next step to becoming a steward.
What does a CUPE steward do? If you are a new steward (or interested in becoming a steward) and want to learn how to help CUPE members solve workplace problems, this introductory workshop is for you!
In this workshop you will learn:
This is the first course required before you begin taking courses in the Steward Learning Series (SLS). Those members who go onto the Steward Learning Series can work toward earning a Steward Learning Series Certificate.
The union will request union leave with your supervisor for all members who sign-up for the workshop. We require 10 days’ notice before the workshop in order to do this.

SAANICH, BC—The Victoria Labour Council, representing union members in the public and private sector throughout Greater Victoria, has endorsed Nathalie Chambers for election to Saanich Council in the upcoming September 23 by-election.
“I’m heartened to receive the support of the labour movement for my candidacy for public office,” says Chambers, a Saanich farmer and well-known social justice and environmental advocate. “This endorsement is a powerful demonstration of unity, with workers, farmers and progressive voters of all stripes coming together for equality, solidarity and fairness for all.”
Chambers is focusing her campaign on affordable housing, support for seniors and youth, environmental stewardship, and strong, cost-effective public services. We urge union members and the general public to show their support for Chambers and the VLC by requesting a lawn sign, volunteering, or making a financial contribution at www.NathalieChambers.ca.
Together, we’ll elect a strong, progressive ally on Saanich Council on Sept. 23.
