Last week, on behalf of the entire membership, CUPE Local 2081 donated $300 in support of CUPE BC’s efforts to assist CUPE members experiencing hardship arising from the raging BC wildfires.

This expenditure will be reported at the next General Membership Meeting.

You will have seen a great news story about rainbow crosswalks via CamNews. As well, you will have seen a retraction regarding who in fact performed this work. CUPE supports the Rainbow Walkways – let there be no misunderstanding. The spirit of inclusion, diversity and equal rights visually represented on Campus, throughout our City, and across the Country, is at the very heart of the labour movement. CUPE has been, and continues to be, a leader in Canada, fighting for equal rights and we are pleased that so many organizations and institutions are starting to catch up.

The reason behind the retraction was to clarify that we, CUPE staff, did not perform the painting work. Anti-Contracting Out is a serious topic for your Union and one that is affecting members across Canada. We always support ‘good news’ stories, but we also want to make sure that all the facts are presented. Your Union leadership engages in monthly meetings to advocate to bring ‘work back in-house’. We do not support a good news story that praises the work done by an outside company, paid for with public dollars. We would also like to acknowledge that mistakes happen and that the spirit of the CamNews notice was meant to be inclusive, rather than disappointing. When a video is sent College-wide showing contractors performing work we have been fighting to bring in-house, it is important that we stand up and call it out. This is a good news/bad news story and we wanted you to know.

Dear colleagues and friends, We need your help!

WestJet Flight Attendants recently reached out to CUPE and asked to join our organization. “They are ready!”

The WestJet Professional Flight Attendant Association (WPFAA) has been trying to organize WestJet Flight Attendants for almost two years now and are sending false information about the status of their drive and incorrect facts about CUPE and the Airline Service Division. We must clear this out as this is confusing many WestJet Flight Attendants. Our biggest challenge is reaching approximately 3,100 WestJet Flight Attendants working 24/7 all over the world.

We have attached an electronic information brochure including a detachable application for membership card. We ask that you please circulate this memo and brochure to your staff, locals, family and friends along with the link to the CUPE WestJet website. Social media is the most practical tool in this type of drive and we really need your help to get our message out to anyone and everyone. Post it on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any means you have and indicate to pass it on.

Help celebrate Pride in Victoria!

Victoria’s Annual Pride Parade and Festival is Sunday, July 9, and you’re invited to join with proud Union members from Vancouver Island and beyond.

Join members from CUPE Locals, the Vancouver Island District Council, and other Unions to walk in the 2017 Victoria Pride Parade at 10am, near the Unifor Float. Watch for the Union Flags Flying High! The parade leaves from Government & Pandora at 11am, winding up at the Pride Festival in MacDonald Park.

·         When: July 9, 2017 (meet at 10am, parade at 11am)

·         Where: Government Street, near Centennial Square

·         Why: Because you are Proud!

Hey folks,

It’s time to get social! It’s the summer time and everyone starts to get into some heavy family time and that is awesome! We all deserve some fun in the sun! With that in mind your Union Family wants you to join us one more time!

We are going to have a BBQ out at Interurban with lots of amazing foods and a cash bar! There will be beverages (cash bar, in the ANNEX to the Interurban Cafeteria), frisbees, a photo booth, and many other surprises! Do you want Shakespeare Tickets? We will have them there!

The menu as it stands:

• Vegan kabobs in a Dr. Pepper marinade (Tofu and Vegetable)
• Lousiana style pork chops
• Chicken wings (for those folks that cannot eat pork)
• various salads
• and dessert squares!

Isn’t that EXCITING! I’m excited and I’m cooking it!

So, here is the thing. I am a really busy guy, but in you have an allergy and/or food need, other than: shellfish, milk/dairy, gluten, you don’t eat pork for any reason, then email me.

The week kicks off on Wednesday, June 21, with a film double header presented by the Cumberland branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library, 5:30 – 7:30pm. Learn about the rise and fall of the Dunsmuir family in ‘Whatever the cost: Hatley Park and the Dunsmuirs’,  and the life and death of labour activist Ginger Goodwin in ‘Goodwin’s Way’.

On Thursday, June 22 the museum presents Vancouver based author, activist, and stand-up comedian Charles Demers at the Cumberland Cultural Centre with local poets Shayne avec i grec and CV Poet Laureate Natalie Nickerson opening the show. Purchase your tickets today!

Songs of the Workers is Miners Memorial Weekend’s Friday night tradition. This classic pub night welcomes local and visiting musicians to share songs and poems in the working class tradition from past to present. Locally brewed beer, pizza, and fantastic company in the OAP Hall starting at 7pm.

Saturday morning’s pancake breakfast from 9-11am at the C.R.I. is by donation, and welcome to all.

Following breakfast, join Karver Everson, K’omoks and Kwakwaka’wakw artist, and Keisha Everson, teacher and member of the K’omoks First Nation, as they present on the history of the region.

At 1pm the graveside ceremony begins at the Cumberland cemetery where tributes are shared and flowers are laid at the grave of Ginger Goodwin and Cumberland’s many fallen miners. From there, the ceremony moves to the Japanese cemetery for the laying of roses and a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the uprooting of Cumberland’s Japanese-Canadian communities.

Saturday concludes with a community supper at the Cultural Centre with John Price, UVic Professor of History, presenting stories from the temporary exhibit ‘150 Years and Counting: Fighting for Justice on the Coast’.
