The Government of BC, with support from BC Post-Secondary Institutions and the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training have developed a COVID-19 Go-Forward Guideline PDF as we head towards the 2020 Fall semester.

Please review the protocols for safe operation within the realm of post-secondary institutions.

The PDF Booklet can be found here: Post Secondary COVID Guidelines and in the updated COVID-19 FAQ page (linked on the side bar of our CUPE website).

Upcoming Election for Member At Large

Hello CUPE 2081,

We will be holding an election for the executive position: Member at Large. The Member at Large position provides a supporting role to the executive table and it is important that we have strong representation. Two of these members will be actively involved over the next year, supporting committees, working as stewards and contributing to our community efforts. The executive table is your voice and representation on behalf of our bargaining unit. You will be voting on two of the three people below:

  • Alesha Peters
  • Ranbir Prihar
  • Shirley Wendland

The election opens on : JULY 14th @ 8AM and closes : JULY 15TH @ 8PM

Simply Voting will be providing a managed election for CUPE 2081, the same as performed for our ratification vote for our new Collective Agreement.

You must be a ‘member in good standing’ to participate. A ‘member in good standing’ means you are a current dues paying member. If you are receiving CUPE-ALL emails but you are not under current active contract, you are not eligible to vote in the election. However, anyone on a regular recurring lay off will be entitled to vote. For eligible, active members in good standing: you will receive an email from Simply Voting with instructions. Please take the time to review the candidates and to vote.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email cupe2081@camosun.ca

CUPE 2081’s response to lay-offs

COVID 19 has upended our globe, our country and our community. There remains very little in the world that has not felt the impact of this pandemic and the havoc it has wreaked upon our world. It has been a difficult time for everyone and we know that we have more road to travel.

Every aspect of how we work and when we come together as a community was altered over the past few months. The ability to be together, to support each other, to see our families and receive their support has been on hold. Now, with the gradual and thoughtful re-opening of our communities, a much needed hug from a loved one is just what many of us need right now.

As we move towards the fall semester, our usual summer preparations are now occurring from home offices or by enacting social distancing measures on campus. The usual frenetic pace, the buzz around the halls, has shifted and in it’s place is a new world that we are all still trying to adjust to. It’s not easy, it hasn’t been easy and we know that each and every one of you have risen to the occasion.

While we have guarded against lay offs over the last few months, the current financial circumstance must now be addressed. Meetings for those impacted members were convened last and this week. We waited to send out additional communication out of respect for those affected and to remind our community that lay offs, in this context, are targeted. This means only areas that have seen significantly reduced work or very little work were areas identified by the College for lay offs. We are not facing Government mandated cuts as we did under the previous Liberal Government.

For CUPE, anyone who is impacted will have met or is scheduled to meet with their manager/HR and union representation. This means if you don’t have a meeting booked and/or concluded, there isn’t one pending.

We want you to know that we will continue to work together, to push the College for meaningful solutions and enforce the provisions of our Collective Agreement. Please don’t hesitate to connect with the Union office if you have questions, comments or concerns.

In solidarity.

CUPE Library Workers need our help

CUPE BC and our colleagues working in public libraries in BC need our help!
Our public libraries are vital to our communities. As key gathering places, closing public libraries was a necessary and critical public health measure to slow the spread of the coronavirus and minimize the harm of the pandemic. Now, as BC starts to safely reopen, our public libraries are more important than ever, yet they remain closed to the public. Public libraries will give our communities a place to safely reconnect; where those who have lost jobs will again have resources to help with their job hunt; and families can access low-cost entertainment and learning opportunities. Our communities need our public libraries to reopen quickly with proper protective measures.

Please visit betterlibraries.ca, and take a moment to send a message to your mayor and council. Let them know you want more public library services and programs reopened with proper protective measures, in solidarity with our CUPE colleagues.
